1. 2001 Elections -- Plan Now!
================================================

Let's get right to it: I want *YOU* to be a candidate, and I have a $200
campaign donation ready for the first LP member who qualifies for the ballot
and gets the endorsement of the other LP members who reside within their
election district. However, to win my $200, the candidate will have to
understand: We're not going to attract attention by proposing "tinkering around
the edges" kinds of "reform". The Republicans and Democrats already have a
lock on the "meaningless reform" market. On the other hand, by offering to
introduce new & bold legislation -- such as to *abolish* a town tax; or to
repeal big chunks of the county zoning code, for example -- that might wake up
some voters and get them to join us. Our candidate must bring new and fresh
ideas to the table. There are libertarians already out there -- they just
don't know that's what they are yet. When they start hearing some hard-hitting
libertarian proposals, they will find out, and then they will call us. This is
th
e key to getting my $200.

The benefits of running are many, but chief among them is this: do you think
you will get less government by voting for either of the old-party candidates
that will be running? Do you think either of them will do a better job than
you could of representing your philosophy of limited government? You and I
both know the answer to both questions is "no". No politician has any special
skills -- YOU are as competent to serve in elected office as any career
politician.

Please consider running for office in 2011. If you are interested, please fill
out our candidate information form right away, and we will contact you within
24 to 48 hours:

3. Rick Sincere - Articles on ABC privatization
================================================

From former LPVA chairman Rick Sincere:

>I have been writing a series of articles for Examiner.com about Governor Bob
>McDonnell's proposals for privatizing the state's monopoly on wholesale and
>retail sales of distilled spirits. (This is often put in shorthand as "ABC
>privatization.")
>
>These articles include a two-part interview with Governor McDonnell, which I
>conducted in Roanoke last Wednesday, just before the first of his eight
>planned town-hall meetings on government reform:
>
>McDonnell Interview, Part 1: http://tinyurl.com/37vmpw2
>
>McDonnell Interview, Part 2: http://tinyurl.com/38474wx
>
>The first in the series was excerpted from a longer interview I did with
>Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie, who called the state ABC monopoly "mind
>numbing".
>
>Gillespie interview: http://tinyurl.com/37bs6k7
>
>I also interviewed Garrett Peck, the author of The Prohibition Hangover, a
>history and analysis of U.S. regulation of alcoholic beverages.
>
>Peck interview: http://tinyurl.com/2cmntl5
>
>Thanks to the Mercatus Center at GMU, I was able to speak with Duquesne
>University economist Antony Davies, who has studied privatization efforts in
>other states, as well as comparing "social outcomes" in 48 states between
>1970 and 2006.
>
>Davies interview: http://tinyurl.com/38ubo3b
>
>Finally, at Governor McDonnell's town-hall meeting last week, I spoke with
>state Senator Ralph Smith, who suggests that the General Assembly may be
>resistant to privatization proposals (though he said so diplomatically).
>
>Smith interview: http://tinyurl.com/39ktjph
>
>An interesting historical note is made on my blog, with a reference to an
>article on this topic by syndicated columnist Deroy Murdock, published in
>1996!
>
>Blog entry on McDonnell interview: http://tinyurl.com/2wtoqur
>
>This is an important issue. Its final resolution will remove the last
>vestige of Progressive-era socialism from Virginia's government and economy.
>If you have not yet contacted your Delegate or state Senator on this issue,
>please do so.
>
>I plan to write more on this topic, which has been a major concern of mine
>since I first ran as a Libertarian for the House of Delegates back in 1991.
>It's about time it's being taken seriously. I'm glad that a governor has
>moved beyond paying lip service to the issue and is actually taking the lead
>on making a change in a positive direction.

4. Billionaire Supporters of 1980 LP Presidential Ticket Profiled
================================================

 From Roy Scherer:

> I just finished a very informative article in the current (cover date
> Aug. 30, 2010) issue of THE NEW YORKER, about David and Charles Koch,
> who have contributed approximately 3.1459 zillion dollars to libertarian
> (and Libertarian) causes. Although one has to allow for the liberal
> bias of both the writer and the magazine, the article is still well
> worth reading, IMHO. It had a lot of stuff of which I was unaware,
> in spite of having been a member/associate of the LP since the
> seventies, and having worked for years with a prominent LP activist
> and sometimes official. References throughout to a number of groups
> and activists with whom you'll be familiar.
>
> The full text should be online at:
>
> You might wish to actually purchase the issue (within the next few days),
> or check it out at your local library, since it also has a great article
> by Oliver Sacks on "Face-Blind", an unusual disorder from which I and
> many others suffer.
>
> -- Roy

My own notes: You can read the entire article in one long page at:

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/08/30/100830fa_fact_mayer?printable=true&currentPage=10

And Roy's comment "...one has to allow for the liberal bias of both the writer
and the magazine..." indeed. Every bit of political activity the writer (Jane
Meyer
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/bios/jane_mayer/search?contributorName=jane%20mayer
) reviews is shaded with evil overtones. For instance, she says "...
Greenpeace issued a report identifying the company as a 'kingpin of climate
science denial.'..." -- but of course she won't have anything to say about the
legions of teeming nerds and hangers-on who agitate for more government
regualtion in the environmental arena. Many of these agitators are often
themselves funded by either government money or corporate interests that profit
from regulated industry. The investment fund that Gore set up in order to
profit from his successful agitation for environmental regulation is a prime
example.

I was also amused to see that Ms. Martin didn't catch this factual error:
"Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, is a multimedia exploration
of the theory that mankind evolved in response to climate change. .... Only at
the end of the exhibit, under the headline 'OUR SURVIVAL CHALLENGE,' is it
noted that levels of carbon dioxide are higher now than they have ever been..."

The truth is that corbon dioxide levels have been declining steadily since the
earth was formed; even during the age of dinosaurs and the early formation of
the mammal that ultimately evolved into us, atmospheric CO2 was much higher.

http://pubs.acs.org/subscribe/archive/ci/30/i12/html/12learn.html

Despite the minor uptick in atmospheric CO2, the earth is on a long-term CO2
starvation trend, which has a detrimental effect on plant life. CO2 in the
atmosphere is a good thing.

5. Radical Religious Regulation in America?
================================================

"Should we be alarmed that religious groups with theocratic tendencies and
ultraconservative social views are trying to impose their values on the rest of
us?" ask Bart Hinkle. Read the answer:

7. LPVA MEDIA RELEASE: GIVE IT BACK, BOB!
================================================

The following release was distributed to the media, regarding the alleged
"surplus" of state revenue over budget:

**************************************

The Libertarian Party of Virginia today called on Bob McDonnell to give the
so-called "surplus" back to the people from whom it was taken: the roughly 3.5
million taxpaying families who filed a Virginia income tax return earlier this
year. After all, say the Libertarians -- the money belongs to those taxpayers,
not state employees.

According to the Libertarians, the past two years have seen an endless stream
of state & local government employees and politicians wailing "woe is our
budget" to every media outlet that would parrot their panic. As it turns out,
however, there has been no revenue decline at all.

The reality is that Virginia's government has slathered on an increasing amount
of lard in its bank account just about every year for the last three decades....
