ACTION ITEM: Write Your Reps to Ask For Better Ballot Laws! ================================================ Time to get out those pens, faxes, email programs, etc -- to ask your friendly state legislator to introduce a bill to ease the definition of "party" in Virginia. Virginia is one of the 4 worst states in the country on that score. The median vote test for a group to be considered a "party" in the U.S. is 2%. All of Virginia's neighbors are in this range. West Virginia is 1%, Maryland is 1%, North Carolina is 2%, Tennessee is 2.5%, Kentucky is 2%. The only states in the nation in which the vote test is over 5% are Oklahoma, Virginia, and Alabama. So Virginia is one of the 3 worst. Not only that, Virginia is one of only 11 states in which a group can't transform itself into a qualified party before any given election. In November 1998, one house of the Virginia legislature passed a bill to create a party petition procedure. Unfortunately it didn't pass the other house, and there has been no work on this in the long, long period since 1998. That procedure as passed by the committee was a petition of 10,000, but then it was amended to require 25,000 signatures. It should be revived. For more information on how to contact your state reps, see this page: http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform If you enter your name and address, this page will return your Delegate & Senate members, and provide a way to contact each. ================================================ 2. NATIONAL NEWS: Don't Forget to Get Your Federal Travel License Before You Go Anywhere ================================================ Still don't understand that we are now "licensed to travel" by the federal government? Read on: >"He found he was unable to print out a boarding pass either from his >computer or from airline kiosks at airports. And when he approached >ticket agents, they were blocked from producing a boarding pass for >him without first calling a Secure Flight number at the Department of >Homeland Security. Secure Flight is a program that requires airlines >to submit passenger names and birthdates to DHS in advance of a >flight, to be checked against watchlists." VIRGINIA NEWS: Virginia Gun Rights Activist Arrested -- for pointing Finger! ================================================ Never point at royalty. They take it as a threat to life and limb, coming from one of us Mundanes: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?83848-**-Legal-Defense-fund-for-Skidmark-**&p=1413566&viewfull=1#post1413566 The first question that comes to mind, of course, is "where do they get these people?" The next question is what to do about it. That part's easy: Donate to Paul's defense fund. Next, write a letter to the security company -- I don't know, wishing them bankruptcy, or something -- for committing such an arbitrary wrong. Letting Paul leave should have been the end of it. You could also write a letter to the local sheriff, but government employees don't care what Mundanes think of them when they're driving a boot into their necks, so it's probably pointless to bother. Which brings us to the best solution: Support the elimination of bureaucratic police forces, in favor of private, contracted police. Yes, even though the central culprit in this case was a private security guard, the fact is that a private firm faces corporate & personal liability, in a way that government police do not. Private security firms can and do get forced from the business when one of their employees step over the line; but more importantly, misbehaving private cops are very likely to see prison time, especially in comparison to government cops who have problems playing nice with the public. As an example, how many times have you heard of bureaucops shooting unarmed and innocent civilians in "wrong door" raids, where not a single officer gets charged, much less convicted, of anything? In contrast, private "protection" employees are normally prosecuted when they make a serious mistake. I'm reminded of a botched raid two bounty hunters made in Henrico County many years ago. They went to the wrong house, put a woman in custody, then found out she wasn't the right one, and they were arrested and jailed. Anyone who wishes to see how private policing can work should hie to the following book: http://mises.org/store/Enterprise-of-Law-The-Justice-without-the-State-P297.aspx ================================================ 4. 150th Anniversary of Civil War: Not Such a Simple Issue ================================================ A <http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/26/AR2010122601696.html>recent article by EJ Dionne noted the upcoming 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, and it urged the widespread adoption of the leftist view of that war: that it was all about slavery. Unfortunately, the article ignores the fact that, as in all things politic, "it ain't so simple". There is no such thing as a "good war". Ever. The desire to go to war is all about one thing, and one thing only: Money. The slavery issue was just a way for Lincoln to make war into a moral imperative. In our time, terrorism is similarly used to justify overseas aggression.
