This newsletter has been going out since January 2009. It needs a permanent editor! Drop me an email at <[email protected]>. ================================================ 1. Next SCC Meeting TOMORROW! Saturday, January 22 ================================================ The next meeting of the state committee will occur on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 1:00 pm, with an 12:00 am lunch preceding. For details including location, time, etc, see the January 22 listing on the LPVA Calendar: http://lpva.com/Calendar/default.php Minutes of previous meetings are posted at: http://www.LPVA.com/Archives/SCCMinutes/Minutes.php Bring your appetite, your ideas, be ready to roll up your sleeves, and help us win a free country! ================================================ 2. UPDATE: The Gloucester 4 ================================================ Remember the Gloucester 4 (or 40)? Your humble editor profiled this story in ODLL's third issue (2009/01/28; see article 1, "SLAPP'ing Citizens"): http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00117.html ... as well as our 17th issue (Friday, June 19, 2009; see article 6, titled "Gloucester County Four - Update"): http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00156.html . This month, the case was argued before the Virginia Supreme Court: "Arguing before the Virginia Supreme Court on Tuesday, an attorney for the Gloucester 40 said it's not surprising to read in a newspaper about people having their rights to political speech protections violated.... But Americans are accustomed to reading about it happening elsewhere in the world, said Virginia Beach appellate attorney Steve Emmert in his closing argument.... 'This kind of thing must not happen in America and it must not happen in Virginia,' Emmert said. Interestingly, the main architect of all the trouble in Gloucester, Teresa Altemus, was turned out of office last November -- yet now she's become actrive in a Tea Party group in the area. Who knew she was interested in government accountability, reuced budgets, and increased responsiveness? Matthew Sabo's Gloucester blog has done a lot of in-depth coverage of the story: http://weblogs.dailypress.com/news/local/breakingnews/blog/ Do you live in Gloucester? Are you interested in promoting better and smaller government? Then run for one of the offices up for election: http://weblogs.dailypress.com/news/local/breakingnews/blog/2011/01/list_of_seats_up_for_election.html ================================================ 3. Ridiculous-Government-In-Action ================================================ Or is that "Ridiculous Government **Inaction**? ----------------- From Old Dominion Watchdog: UVA wants to charge Del. Bob Marshall $8,300 to compile climate-change documents, and the delegate's not happy. He's firing back with two bills...but legislators say they <http://olddominionwatchdog.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d195a77b46a877ab2b3a62b1&id=ad98354706&e=7f4b7bb796>don't do what he intended and need major revision. ----------------- Justice for Sal: After five years, the family of a Virginia optometrist killed by a SWAT team finally gets some closure: http://reason.com/archives/2011/01/17/justice-for-sal ----------------- "Those who have been expressing the most childish intolerance of "vitriolic rhetoric" are really just intolerant of opposing views and of dissent from the intrusive power of the State. The statists are unwilling or unable to tolerate people who stand up for themselves, their lives and their property and who are trying to protect themselves from the aggression and violence of the State. " http://www.lewrockwell.com/lazarowitz/lazarowitz19.1.html ----------------- Driver's Licenses: Not Really About Driving! Oh wow! They're just another "revenue enhancement"! [Eric Peters, by the way, is a fellow Virginian. He lives in the SW part of the state.] http://epautos.com/?p=1673 ================================================ 4. Predicting the Outcome... ================================================ OK, let's make a prediction: The former cop in this case, who organized the event, and wrongly assured his non-ex-cop assistants Carl Giuffre and Domenico Spano that it was legal for children to use the Uzi (under Massachusetts law, it was not), walks away scot-free because he was part of the elite's enforcer corps for a while: Read more: http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/14/edward-fleury-acquitted-in-machine-gun-shooting-death-of-christo/?icid=main|netscape|dl1|sec4_lnk2|195470 Meanwhile, the Mundanes, Giuffre and Spano -- the non-ex-cops who were running the range that day -- any bets they will be hung out to dry? http://bloggingouttacontrol.com/2011/01/07/dad-videotapes-as-son-shoots-himself-in-the-head-with-uzi/ All of that said, shooting is always a dangerous activity. It's also a fun sport, and one can choose not to take it up. The father, Charles Bizilj, had that choice, and signed a liability waiver to that effect. It was an accident. That said, I've taken my son shooting -- and I wasn't standing ten feet away from him videotaping while trusting others to help him. I was inches away, and I personally made sure he maintained a proper grip and stance. The first few times he shot, my hands covered his, so he could learn what firing felt like before doing it alone. ================================================ 5. Virginia State & Local Government Spending Database ================================================ Wondering what your county government spends every year? HINT: It isn't peanuts. Wondering how much the local fire protection monopoly establishment, for example, costs you every year? HINT: It isn't peanuts, either. Take a look here: http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/online/database_center/city_county_govt_spending/ Make sure your browser's javascript is 'on'; and when the page comes up just select your locality from the drop-down list. [Caveat: The site does not say when the last figures were plugged into the database; so I'm not sure what year those figures represent.] ================================================ 6. REDUX: Assassin Kills 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, Five Others ================================================ Last issue (#47), I said: >>To the left, life is only important if that life is that of the nobles >>of government... To hell with us Mundanes. In reply to which, our reader Eric Kasten <[email protected]> of Chesterfield replied: >>Just adding to #1... Don't forget how this wacko gunman is being >>charged! Charged with killing, attempting to assassinate, etc... >>FEDERAL employees. Not only does this nominalize the non-Federal >>employees shot or killed, it also highlights the class differences. >>Why is it a higher crime to attack, kill, etc... a Federal employee, >>politician, or president? Why are 'regular' citizens LESS important? >>Our Declaration of Independence states "All men are created equal", so >>why isn't punishment equal??? Aye, Eric. The solution: Vote Libertarian. Run for office as a Libertarian. Join us. ================================================ 7.
