1.  LEGISLATIVE ALERTS!
================================================

a) VCDL -- I encourage every Libertarian to sign up for alerts from the
Virginia Citizens Defense League. They are 100% with us on the gun issue, and
their legislator contact setup is first-class and easy to use:
http://www.vcdl.org/static/va-alert.html

b) Paige Winfield Cunningham's "Old Dominion Watchdog" occassionally provides
some timely alerts about upcoming legislation: http://virginia.watchdog.org/

2. FEATURED VIDEO: What NOT to say at an LP Outreach Booth
================================================

Now this is funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=056C4wM9niQ

================================================
3. Reader Reaction to SWAT Murder
================================================

Remember last issue (see
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00247.html ), when we passed
along the following: "After five years, the family of a Virginia
optometrist killed by a SWAT team finally gets some closure:"
http://reason.com/archives/2011/01/17/justice-for-sal

Petersburg LP member and libertarian activist extraordinaire Roy Scherer had
the following reaction:

>>Ri-i-i-i-ght!
>>
>>The report says, "We cannot definitively conclude whether or not MPO
>>Bullock’s index finger was on the trigger prior to the involuntary
>>muscle contractio", and "We believe, based on MPO Bullock’s extensive
>>training and experience, that he did not have his index finger on the
>>trigger and that the contraction was strong enough to pull his finger
>>onto the trigger and subsequently pull the trigger."
>>
>>[nonsense.]
>>
>>If the officer's finger was alongside the trigger guard, as is
>>prescribed by basic safety practices, an involuntary contraction would
>>have squeezed the trigger gaurd, with no harm done. Only if the
>>finger was actually ON the trigger would a contraction have caused a
>>shot to be fired. I'll also metion that the report says, "He was not
>>aiming his weapon at Mr. Culosi’s chest", which makes it passing
>>strange that the bullet struck precisely there.
>>
>>It's a damn good thing that our governmrnt is here to protect us! I
>>shudder to think what it would be like if they were here only to
>>preserve their own power, and that of those who are part of "the
>>establishment".

Now, now, Roy, everyone knows that statements like "No laws were broken, and no
department policies or procedures were violated" are simply bureaucratic
code-words that mean that the police department knows its officer committed a
criminal act -- and intends to do absolutely nothing about it. But to make an
omelet, ya gotta break some eggs, ya know. Just remember, the government is
here to protect you!

4. Light Reading: Libertarian Writer Thomas Woods' New Book Out This Week
================================================

He says he could have named it "Everything Needs to Be Abolished, and Here’s
Why".

5. Did tariffs really cause the Civil War? The Morrill Act at 150
================================================
Did protective tariffs really bring about the Civil War? It's an argument that
enthusiasts of the era are bound to encounter at some point, and also among the
most contentious and least understood of the many debates surrounding the
instigating

 of secession 150 years ago. Read the rest:
