Back home now!] BECOME A LIBERTARIAN CANDIDATE IN 2011: To get started, visit http://Campaign.LPVA.com and let us know! And don't forget, I'm still looking for the right local campaign to drop a few nickels on: http://freevirginia.blogspot.com/2010/08/1000-challenge.html ================================================ 1. VIRGINIA NEWS: Libertarian Candidates in Virginia ================================================ Currently, several LP members are running for office. I hope to print a complete list next issue, as more of the petitioning candidates have finished. If *you* are running for office this year, please let us know! One candidate, current LPVA Communications Committee member Matthew Simpson, is running for House of Delegates. He originally expressed interest in running as an endorsed Libertarian, but has opted to run as an independent. While he is not endorsed by the Libertarian Party, and while my mentioning him is not intended to be an endorsement, I encourage you to check out his website: http://matthewsimpson54.sharepoint.com His campaign platform is here: http://matthewsimpson54.sharepoint.com/Pages/Platform.aspx Another libertarian is running for 2012 US House of Representatives: Karen Kwiatkowski. Many of you are probably familiar with Karen, she has been a strong advocate of ending US interventionism abroad, and at a Rocktown Libertarians she recently described herself as an anarchist libertarian (anarchist libertarians generally advocate the replacement of *all* government functions with private sector alternatives -- see http://libertariananarchy.com/about/ ). Anyway, as above, she is not endorsed by the Libertarian Party, and mentioning her in the newsletter is not intended to be an endorsement. That said, I encourage you to check out her website: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:2QD-pTrGFIwJ:www.karenkforcongress.com/+karen+kwiatkowski+congress&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a&source=www.google.com [As of press time, her direct website seems to be down, so the above is the Google cache of it. The direct site is http://www.KarenKForCongress.com ] Karen also wrote a few media releases for the LPVA, same as Matthew did: http://lpva.com/HTML/forTheMedia.php ================================================ 2. NATIONAL NEWS: Still Believe You Live in a Free Country? ================================================ LewRockwell.com: "Thousands of elderly British ship passengers are put through <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/8559732/Cruise-passengers-tell-of-seven-hour-security-revenge-nightmare.html>hell by US government agents in LA because, in letting it be known that they did not like being put through hell, they dissed these great public servants, who retaliated in typical police state fashion. No wonder foreign tourism is way down. Who wants to pay for a tour of Guantanamo? " http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/8559732/Cruise-passengers-tell-of-seven-hour-security-revenge-nightmare.html ================================================ 3. VIRGINIA NEWS: Richmond Libertarian Tom Blanton on Bias in our Society ================================================ Can prejudice and bias be eliminated from our society? Tom Blanton takes a look at this issue for us. -------- Bias in Society, by Tom Blanton >If you look for bias, wherever there are humans you will most likely >find it. If you look at Family Courts, you will find bias against >males. Is there bias against males at colleges where female students >outnumber male students? What about elementary schools where boys are >required to take Ritalin because they have behaved like boys? Bias is >everywhere. > >We have a Black president and a large number of fully assimilated >Hispanic and Asian people in the upper middle-class. There are many >Black mayors in America. > >There will always be racism to some degree and it isnt clear what >government can do to eliminate it entirely outside of creating thought crimes. > >Rights are also a nebulous thing in a political system that is run by >elites for elites. It is no secret that the smallest minority of all, >the wealthy and powerful, are treated as if they are more equal than >the majority. > >Politicians arent concerned with group rights or individual rights. >They will only give lip service to these issues if it is in their best >interest to do so for political reasons. > >To expect fairness, equal treatment under the law, and the equitable >distribution of government services is a fantasy. Struggles go on for >years to obtain good government and there is no guarantee of success. > >Maybe the best solution is to lower expectations of what government >can do and instead rely on ourselves, in a decentralized society, to >take care of our own needs without the elites managing our finances >and our lives. > >In a country of about 330 million people, there just isnt any way to >make everyone happy. To allow any degree of self-determination, >massive decentralization needs to occur. Some people may organize in >groups that do things we consider stupid, immoral, or self-defeating. >On the other hand, do you want those same groups imposing their agenda >on you through political means? -------- Tom hits the nail on the head. Politicians can't help the situation. If anything, anything they try top do about it only worsens the problem. Libertarians favor allowing individuals to resolve the problem of bias and discrimination by leaving them free to deal with each other peacefully and honestly. Libertarians believe individual rights should not be denied, abridged, or enhanced at the expense of other people's rights, on the basis of sex, wealth, race, color, creed, age, national origin, personal habits, political preference, or sexual orientation by the laws at any level of government. Protective labor laws, Selective Service laws, and other laws that violate rights selectively should be repealed entirely rather than being extended to all groups. Discrimination imposed by the government has brought disruption in normal relationships of people, set neighbor against neighbor, created gross injustices, and diminished human potential. Anti-discrimination enforced by the government is the reverse side of the coin, and will for the same reasons create the same problems. Consequently, Libertarians oppose any government attempts to regulate private discrimination, including discrimination in employment, housing, and privately owned so-called public accommodations. The right to trade includes the right not to trade -- for any reasons whatsoever. ================================================ 4.
