Did You Remember The Statue of Liberty on Friday, Oct. 28? ================================================ A Forgotten Day & a Forgotten Country by Harry Browne October 28, 2003 On this date in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was first unveiled in New York Harbor. You're probably aware that the Statue wasn't built in America. It was built with money voluntarily raised from the people of France and then erected in New York Harbor with money volluntarily raised from the people of the United States. Foreigners were grateful for America's liberty, because the very existence of such a country as ours meant that someday they might be able to have the same peace and liberty in their own countries. Then & Now Today, 117 years later, that America doesn't exist anymore even though politicians love to talk about "our freedoms." In 1886 America had an open hand to the rest of the world. Take a Class at Mises University: "The Real Causes of Americas Wars: A Revisionist View", Beginning 11/8 ================================================ "War is the health of the state". These famous words of Randolph Bourne have been confirmed throughout the course of American history. Mises University is offering an online history course that will examine the origins of a number of Americas wars. In each case, we will study the real origins of the war and compare this with the officially circulated mythology. All too often, Americas wars are presented as conflicts between the good guys, us and the bad guys, our enemies. Propaganda to view the wars in this way plays a key role in advancing the power of the state, and it is essential for libertarians to understand the issues involved. The course consists of six lectures, on the following wars: Week 1: The War Between the States Week 2; The Spanish-American War Week 3: World War I Week 3: World War II Week 4: The Onset of the Cold War Week 5: The Korean War Week 6: Vietnam Lectures: The video lectures are online. Lectures will be Tuesday evenings, 7:00 8:30 pm Eastern Time. They will be recorded and made available for enrolled students to download. Reading: All readings for the course will be free and available online. Grades and Certificates: The final grade will depend on quizzes. Taking the course for a grade is optional. The Mises Academy is currently not accredited, but this course is worth 3 credits in our own internal system. Feel free to ask your school to accept Mises Academy credits.
