Friends, Fellow Libertarian and former Libertarian candidate for House of Delegates in 2011, Mike Kane, reports on a bit of outreach he and other Libertarians did at the Ron Paul appearance in Northern Virginia yesterday.
Kudos to Mike, Matt, and all others who helped! -- Marc ************************************************************* When I got to the Ron Paul Rally at the Waterford hotel at around 5:15 there were already 800-1000 people in line. I was amazed, as the last RP rally in 2008 had pretty low turnout, definitely less than 500 people. Many people I spoke to towards the front had been there since 12 noon. Most everyone had a sign, or a sweatshirt, or a hat that said Ron Paul. There were people from the Free State Project and Oathkeepers handing out literature. I got to the back of the line where I met a few liberty activists from MD, who secured my spot in line. I walked up and down the line holding a sign saying "After GOP insiders steal the election, come home!!! Libertarian Party <http://www.lpnova.org>www.lpnova.org." Many people asked to take a picture of the sign. Mos everyone who saw it said "YES" in agreement, gave a head nod of approval, or started clapping or yelling in approval. I distributed the small amount of LP literature that I could. I watched the line swell to well over 2,000 people. At 6:00 , the line started moving and I hopped back in line. There were plenty of people doing sign waving By 6:15 before I entered, I looked and the line was as far as I could see, after a long loop around one side of the building. I was inside, where I was still holding my sign. I met up with Pat Norton, a friend in liberty and former Rand Paul intern. Right then, a campaign staffer asked me to remove my sign and I reluctantly agreed, wanting to respect the campaign's wishes and not tarnish the Libertarian Party. This later led to a photo op with Dr. Paul. Meanwhile, Matt Cholko was busy putting LP NOVA fliers on cars outside. He distributed over 800 fliers, hitting the whole Waterford parking lot, and parts of the neighboring hotels and their respective lots. The fliers were standard LP nova on the backside had the same text as the sign, plus Matt printed visit us with all of the website links (<http://lpnova.org>lpnova.org, <http://lpva.com>lpva.com, <http://lp.org>lp.org), plus the link to our meetup group. Great job Matt! I met up with Josef Storm and Jason Scheurer and we had a blast at the rally. Josef was kind of enough to buy us a couple of beers. Thanks Josef. Unfortunately for many people, including recently elected LP VA Chair Chuck Moulton, the fire marshal disallowed entry to the venue after a certain point. The announced attendance by the campaign was 2,000, however many reports stated that capacity was either 1,500 or 1,700. I think it was somewhere around 1,700, and there was still plenty of room. According to many accounts, the line outside had another 1,000 people in it who were refused entry. All in all it was a great outreach experience.
