Dear Colleagues,
The Washington Times published a letter I wrote regarding the attempts by the
major parties to kick alternative parties off the ballot. It is currently
online at:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/oct/1/parties-maintain-political-stranglehold/
I note with some annoyance that the Times put Goode in as a "story topic"
keyword, but omitted Gary Johnson and did not link to him.
I don't know how long it will be on their website, so here is the text:

Parties Maintain Political Stranglehold
As a Libertarian, I was intrigued to read the article Va.
<http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/republican-party/>GOP finds hope in
polling for <http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/virgil-goode/>Goode (Web,
Sept. 23). The most entertaining part was the quote from
<http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/gerald-e-connolly/>Rep. Gerald E.
Connolly, Virginia Democrat, who said: I think its part and parcel of a
shameful philosophy that has somehow taken over the party of Lincoln. Whats
the harm in letting people [get] on the ballot?
But <http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/gerald-e-connolly/>Mr. Connollys
own <http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/democratic-party/>Democratic Party
did the same thing to <http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/ralph-nader/>Ralph
Nader in 2004. Democrats used a peculiarity in Pennsylvania election law to
force the invalidation of
<http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/ralph-nader/>Mr. Naders petitions and
to get a court to require him to pay the
<http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/democratic-party/>Democratic Partys
attorneys almost $100,000 in legal fees just for the crime of attempting to
defend his petitions. Mr.
<http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/connollys-party/>Connolly's party warred
also against the Greens nationwide in 2004 and 2008.
What the Democrats did to
<http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/ralph-nader/>Mr. Nader in Pennsylvania
inspired <http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/republican-party/>Republican
Party attorneys in Virginia. They challenged (unsuccessfully) the 2012
petitions for Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson and
Constitution Party candidate
<http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/virgil-goode/>Virgil Goode and called
for the adoption in Virginia of the mafia-like challenge system.
The corruption goes all the way to the top: Barack Obamas first election to
public office was the result of using claims of technical defects in the
petitions of his opponents. Democrats wrote the nations first Soviet-style
ballot-access restrictions, all intended to eliminate competition. Now the
Republicans attempt to slam the door on alternative candidates.
Both Democrats and Republicans have resorted to mafia tactics to maintain their
political strangleholds on the electorate. Its a pity, too, because all
theyre really accomplishing is to turn the United States into a large banana
republic.
