Won't the lack of 'parallel' cause problems calling tools that can only
handle one file at a time?

I'd propose:
Keep 'parallel'
add 'enablesplit', defaulting to false
hardcode the limit to the posixly correct 4096 bytes.

I don't think that's too complicated, or am I just used to it?
