Turned out to be yet another property that needed to be passed down (hasn't been a NullPointerException, just a misleading message combined with the fact that classes.zip hasn't been on the CLASSPATH in the forked testcase. I'll send my modified versions of InitializeClassTest.java and initializeclass.xml in a separate mail, as my MUA seems to do things to attachments that the mailing list configuration doesn't like.
