Besides which you will most likely be able to use *most* Ant1.x files with
ant2 depending on what features you use ;)

Not even with recent versions. If you stick with a specific vendor + version
of make (GNU make being the defacto standard) then you are unlikely to run
into issues. However try running GNUmake files other vendors make tools -
aint pretty ;)

indeed.
However Costin if you feel so strongly about it then feel free to come back
as a committer on ant-dev (all you need do is ask). You can help verify
changes prior to being committed and definetly help fielding questions on on
the lists.
