Two reasons I can think of off the top of my head:

o Prototype generics compiler
o 1.4 assertions

My guess is that the 1.4 assertions stuff might be in jikes by now (anyone know?) but 
I'd be surprised if they'd done the generics stuff yet.

Personally I find that the normal compiler is fine these days - it's so much faster 
than it was, there's not *that* much difference between it and jikes now.
