what is happening is that the NT telnet client is authenticating to the
server using the NTLM auth which MS pretends is safer than sending out
passwords plaintext but is probably just a nice way of getting someone's
domain password with enough CPU time spent on forcing it.
The best test for this is to telnet to the server using Unix telnet, not the
windows one. what you see there is what <telnet> gets.
