As you all recommended I removed the 1.4 optional tasks and am using the one that came with 1.5Beta but the problem still persists? Any thoughts? I am using the JVM that comes with JDK 1.2.2 running on a Win2k box.

What VM are you using? The code looks fine to me - it's very straightforward. Could you either try with a different VM or try with the JIT turned off? That way we should get better line numbers.
