PRAGUE, Czech Republic (Reuters) - NATO should take in Lithuania, Latvia and
Estonia in its next round of expansion, Senator John McCain of Arizona said
Tuesday.
Russia opposes membership of the three Baltic states, all of them former
members of the Soviet Union.
"I believe that the Baltic states should be included," McCain said after
meeting Czech President Vaclav Havel in Prague.
"I think there is a certain symbolism associated with these three small
nations as a part of the Atlantic alliance."
NATO may issue membership invitations to some of the nine applicant countries
at a summit in Prague in November next year.
While the United States has said it is committed to further NATO enlargement,
Germany and other member states have stressed the need not to provoke Moscow,
which says it sees eastward expansion as a threat.

Some NATO member states also question whether the military organization can
cope with taking in more poorly funded eastern European forces, but McCain
said he believed the Baltic states were up to the challenge.
McCain lost the Republican presidential primary nomination to George W. Bush
in the 2000 U.S. election.
