BALKANS: US LINK TO CROAT WAR CRIMES IN KRAJINA DISCUSSED

Croatian general Ante Gotovina has been indicted by the Hague Tribunal for war crimes committed during the Krajina offensive (Operation storm). The Croatian Prime Minister, Ivica Racan, states that he does not know where Gotovina is, but his President, Stipje Mesic, is better informed, declaring that Gotovina is “somewhere in Croatia”.

As the noose closes, high-placed Croats show that they are prepared to make declarations which could cause embarrassment in some circles. Former Croatian chief of intelligence, Markica Rebic, stated that he is prepared to give evidence at the trial of Gotovina at The Hague. Rebic claims that Newsweek’s recent article denouncing US involvement in operation Storm will cause The Hague to drop the charges against Gotovina.

The former National Security Advisor to former President of Croatia, Franjo Tudjman, has declared that there is no evidence that Croats in Krajina committed war crimes. It will be remembered that film footage shot by a Canadian journalist during the Krajina offensive was forcibly taken by The Hague tribunal and has since disappeared.

Rebic stated that he had liased with two American Generals when they visited Zagreb in 1995 and that “Operation Storm” was part of the USA’s “Peace in the Balkans” project. He claimed “Croatia was patiently, and to its own damage, silent about the co-operation with America”. The former US Ambassador to Zagreb, peter Galbright, has confirmed that Croatian and US intelligence agencies were in contact or cooperating during the offensive in Krajina, in which war crimes were committed.

Another former chief of the Croatian Intelligence Agency, Miroslav Tudjman, claims that his agency began “intensive co-operation” with western intelligence at the beginning of 1993, shortly after its creation. He claims that Operation Storm “was approved by the Croatian government, that is, the president (Franjo Tudjman) after the demand was justified by ambassador Galbright”.

Miroslav Tudjman claimed that the USA would not provide any evidence from archive documents linking it with Operation Storm or confirming links with Croatian intelligence before or during this operation.

The dirty work done, the USA can sit back and deny it was ever involved.
