Thursday, 6 December 2001 7:55 (ET) Greek Cypriot leader makes historic visit NICOSIA, Cyprus, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- For the first time in 27 years, a Greek Cypriot president has crossed the dividing line to meet with his Turkish counterpart on the side of the island claimed by Turkey. President Glafcos Clerides Wednesday dined for 2 1/2 hours with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash as a culinary start to negotiations on reunification, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported. On Tuesday, the two met for the first time in four years at a summit in a U.N. mansion in the Nicosia buffer zone, the Turkish Daily News said. For 27 years the two sides have disputed the Turkish-claimed area. The only country to recognize the Republic of Northern Cyprus is Turkey, and memories of a harsh war on the island have hindered compromise. At Wednesday's dinner, imbued with symbolism and hospitality, specialties from both sides of the island were served, according to the BBC. The two insisted that negotiations had not formally started. "This is a social event," said Denktash. "Do not make Clerides regret coming to dinner." -- Copyright 2001 by United Press International.
