India, U.S. to Hold Joint Naval Exercise

NEW DELHI, December 8 (Xinhua) -- Capping a series of high-
level visits by top U.S. defense brass here, India and the United
States will commence a three-day joint naval exercise off the
Arabian Sea coast from December 15, the Press Trust of India (PTI)
reported here on Saturday.

This will be the first joint military exercise between India
and the U.S. after the freeze of military ties in the wake of New
Delhi's nuclear tests in 1998.

Two Indian naval warships, a coast guard and an American naval
aircraft will take part in the "search and rescue" exercise, the
PTI noted.

"Highly placed" Indian naval sources were quoted as saying that
they were hopeful that with the surrender of Kandahar by Taliban
in Afghanistan, more U.S. naval warships currently engaged in
strikes against Afghanistan could veer round to take part in the
exercise.

Five other navies including observers from Maldives and Sri
Lanka could also participate in the exercise, the first such
venture since 1997, the sources added.

The joint exercise will be followed by a meeting of the Indo-U.
S. military steering group of the three services, which would
chart out holding of bigger joint inter-services exercises on land
and sea, the PTI added.
