LATEST NEWS Colombia Three moved for fourth time By Barry O'Kelly Dublin, Ireland, 2 December, 2001 BACKGROUND Niall Connolly, Martin McCauley and James Monaghan have been held in Bogota, Colombia since August 11, 2001 as a result of allegations by the Colombian military that they were engaged in training members of the FARC guerilla movement and travelling on false passports. They have been held in a police compound in central Bogota after being first detained in the notorious Modelo jail in the city where riots and killings are routine. Due to the conditions in which they are being held by the Colombian authorities the three men have found it difficult to consult with their legal representatives and to prepare a proper defence during the current investigation. From their arrest they have been held in conditions which constitute a clear breach of their human rights. For the first three weeks they were locked together in a cell 4 metres square with no fresh air and no exercise. Because of the danger of poisoning their food was purchased from outside the jail. They are currently locked up for 23 hours each day with little exercise and more restricted visiting arrangements. Their cells are smaller and darker than previously. Given the publicity in Colombia, Ireland and Britain following their arrest and the serious and unsubstantiated allegations made by political and media commentators their families do not believe they can obtain a fair legal process.
