This is from The San Francisco Examiner,
page A-10, Thursday, December 20, 2001:

Peace may have a chance

Brandon Sprague and Malcolm Gay's article in The Examiner was an
interesting overview of the local antiwar movement. ("Pushing peace,
but few are buying," The Examiner, Dec. 18).

However, it seemed to draw much more negative conclusions than we
have been experiencing in Oakland.

Lake Merritt Neighbors Organized for Peace has been having weekly
peace walks around Lake Merritt every Sunday at 3 p.m. for more than
three months now. The response from drivers and pedestrians has been
overwhelmingly positive. The negative responses during all the walks
in that time could be counted on one hand.

There are alternatives to war. Just because those who believe this
may be in the minority at this time does not mean it isn't true.
Remember that it wasn't that long ago that a majority of the people in
this country opposed the civil rights movement.

Should the abolitionists of the 19th century and the civil rights
advocates of the 20th century have called it quits just because they
were in the minority at that time?
