AFP. 21 December 2001. Translation of bin Laden tape has holes on Saudi connection: report. The translation of the videotape showing top terror suspect Osama bin Laden gloating about the September 11 attacks contains several omissions regarding connections to Saudi Arabia, ABC News reported. The network reported that the Pentagon had omitted certain sections that "could be embarrassing to the government of Saudi Arabia." ABC unveiled its own translation of the tape, containing sections not heard on the recording released last week by the Pentagon. At the start of the tape, a Saudi identified as Khalid al-Harbi who is speaking with bin Laden "seems to claim he was smuggled into Afghanistan by a member of Saudi Arabia's religious police," according to ABC's translation. The Saudi man also said that certain religious leaders in Saudi Arabia, some of them close to the government, had hailed the attacks in their sermons. In the transcript released by the Pentagon, bin Laden named Mohammed Atta as one of the suicide plane hijackers. But in the ABC version, he also mentioned Saudi nationals Nawaf al-Hazmi and Salim al-Hazmi as part of the operation. When asked about the report, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the version released by the US government was "done by several independent translators, with highly reputable credentials." Whitman noted that their names had been released along with the recording, and that when they compared their translations to those prepared by the government, there had been no inconsistencies. But a member of the team that translated the tape for the US government told ABC News that the network's translation was consistent with portions of the government's transcript that had not been released to the public. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
