U.S. Legislators Discuss Antiterrorism Issues With
Hungarian Ministers
BUDAPEST, Jan 9, 2002 -- (BBC Monitoring) Text of
report by Hungarian newspaper Nepszabadsag on 8
January.
Two U.S. senators and a congressman visited Budapest
over the weekend to chiefly discuss aspects of
international antiterrorism cooperation. Ernest
Hollings, Democrat chairman of the Senate trade
committee, Richard Shelby, Republican deputy chairman
of the Senate intelligence committee, and Republican
Congressman Robin Cramer had talks with Ervin Demeter,
minister without portfolio in charge of civil secret
services, as well as the diplomats of the U.S. Embassy
in Budapest.
The three U.S. legislators met Foreign Minister Janos
Martonyi yesterday. The United States might want to
use the expertise of Hungarian specialists in fields
including Central Asian languages and history to
assist the Afghanistan mission, although Hungary has
not received such a request yet, Martonyi said after
the meeting. Hungary maintains its offer of sending a
health-care unit to Afghanistan if required, Martonyi
added. According to an [Hungarian news agency] MTI
report, the foreign minister noted that secret service
cooperation between the two countries was very
intensive and successful.
Martonyi also said that his negotiation partners had
praised Hungary's cooperation with the United States
following the terrorist attacks.
