Ethiopia Denies Presence of Troops in Somalia

Xinhuanet 2002-01-10 05:47:17

ADDIS ABABA, January 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Ethiopian Foreign Ministry
denied here on Wednesday that Ethiopia had deployed troops in
Somalia, saying its government strongly believes that the Somali
people can solve their internal problems by themselves without the
intervention of a third party.
The ministry's remarks came following a report that claimed to
have sighted 12 military vehicles carrying at least 300 Ethiopian
soldiers, armed with heavy and light weapons in Somalia.
Dina Mufti, director of Press, Information and Documentation of
the ministry, said that Ethiopia has no reason to deploy its
troops inside Somalia, as it believes that a durable peace can be
achieved in that country only with the establishment of an
inclusive and broad-based Somali government.
He said the transitional government of Somalia and other
factions have confirmed that there were no Ethiopian troops inside
Somali territories.
Ethiopia has been doing everything in its power to the success
of the efforts being deployed by member states of the Inter-
Governmental Authority on Development to bring peace in Somalia,
said Dina citing by the Ethiopian News Agency.
He also noted that Ethiopia has been using all available venues
and channels in an attempt to bring about a lasting peace and
national reconciliation to the conflict among the warring factions
in the stateless Somalia.  Enditem
