BAGHDAD, January 15 (Xinhuanet) -- An
Iraqi official daily on Tuesday blasted the United States ahead of the
11th anniversary marking the beginning of the 1991 Gulf War and
stressed Iraq's "ability to prevail over its enemies."
The Al-Iraq Daily said in an editorial that "the United States and its
allies targeted Iraq in 1991 as it rejected hegemony and foreign
subversion and the U.S. was worried about Iraq's growing economy, a
matter which posed risk to the Zionism (Israel)," a staunch ally of
the U.S. in the Mideast. The editorial claimed the
U.S.-led onslaught on Iraq "was a result of Iraq being the real strong
Arab state which matches the aspirations of the Arab
nation." However, "Iraqi people were able to sustain the
huge damage (of the Gulf War) due to their steadfastness and adherence
to their country," the editorial said. The Gulf War,
triggered by Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, started on the night of
January 16-17, 1991 when the U.S.-led multinational coalition army
embarked a bombing blitz on Iraq and Iraqi occupation troops in
Kuwait. After a six-week war, Kuwait was liberated and
Iraqi troops were evicted out of the small emirate after a seven-month
occupation.
