AFP. 22 January 2002. US warplanes strike anti-aircraft artillery site in southern Iraq. WASHINGTON -- US warplanes armed with precision-guided weapons struck an anti-aircraft artillery site in southern Iraq in response to "enhancements" to Iraqi air defense systems posing a threat to coalition aircraft, a US military spokesman said Tuesday. The strike Monday near the southern town of Tallil, 270 kilometers (170 miles) southeast of Baghdad, was the first against Iraq since November 27, the US Central Command said. Navy Commander Frank Merriman, a spokesman for the command in Tampa, Florida, said the strike was "in response to Iraqi hostile threats against coalition aircraft monitoring the no-fly zone, including enhancements to its air defense systems." He would not say how or how recently Iraqi air defenses have been enhanced, or whether coalition aircraft were actually fired upon. The command said the strikes "were executed as self-defense measures in response to Iraqi hostile threats and acts against coalition aircrews and their aircraft and are not related to the president's campaign against terrorism." ==^================================================================ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?a84x2u.a9WB2D Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^================================================================
