Riot police armed with batons on Wednesday drove back from the Malacaang
palace gates several dozen students protesting against the deployment of
US troops in the rebellion-torn south.

The policemen attacked the university students with clubs shortly after
they began an unauthorized street protest at the gates of Malacaang
palace, the official residence of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, an
Agence France-Presse photographer saw.  The students were chased all the
way to an intersection about half a kilometer (0.3 miles) away. There were
no arrests and none of the protesters appeared to be seriously injured.

The demonstration occurred while the President was convening a meeting of
the National Security Council to coax her cabinet and leaders of Congress
to support the deployment of about 600 US troops in the country.
