Police Foils Kidnap Bid of American in Southern Philippines ======================================== Xinhuanet 2002-01-26 16:31:00 MANILA, January 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Police said Saturday that they foiled an attempt of a kidnap-for-ransom group to abduct an American plantation manager and killed two members of the gang in the southern Philippines. Policemen killed the two members of the notorious Pentagon group which planned to kidnapped Chris Hubbard, an American manager of Dole Philippines, in Polomolok town, South Cotabato province on Saturday, a Philippine Daily Inquirer online news report quoted regional police commander Chief Superintendent Bartolome Baluyot as saying. Baluyot said a special police force was deployed to stop the kidnappers after being warned of the plot of the Pentagon, which is still holding Italian Roman Catholic priest Giuseppe Pierantoni who was kidnapped in the south in October. The Pentagon group, together with the Abu Sayyaf group, has been listed by Washington as a terrorist group after the terror attacks on the United States on September 11 last year. The Abu Sayyaf bandits, who are still holding an American missionary couple and a Philippine nurse in the southern island of Basilan, are the target of the controversial ongoing Philippine- American joint military exercises dubbed Balikatan (Shoulder to Shoulder) in the Southern Philippines. U.S. troops are banned from directly engaging in combat operations but allowed to fire back in self-defense in operations against the Abu Sayyaf which allegedly has links with the al-Qaeda network of Osama bin laden, whom Washington holds responsible for the September 11 attacks.
