We have raised nearly £2,000, from students, staff and supporters, in two weeks for this trip. This Society has become one of the most active on campus. This is the very least we can do as Israeli armed forces are conducting their biggest cowardly campaign against the Palestinian people since their failed invasion of Beirut in 1982. In a context where the latest killing machines (supplied by the US and UK), of the Zionist Israeli State, are being used against a numerically and technically inferior people, the Palestinians are showing themselves to be, once again, one of the most courageous and self-sacrificing people in the world of recent times. F-16s, Apache gunships, Gunboats, Tanks, oppression and imperialism versus a peoples resistance, a peoples war for liberation with stones, slings, petrol bombs, bodies (!) and sometimes semi-automatics and home made rockets. Not since Apartheid South Africa have we seen such an out and out racist state oppression against a whole people like we see today. Elements within the Sussex Uni Jewish Society, representing the 'jewish' view (a Jewish person is coming on our delegation, and we have much support from Jewish students for us) feel that they must voice their opposition to our activities and campaign. What form has this taken? They have taken opposition to a poster we used saying that Sharon has learnt harrassment, intimidation, expulsion and assassination from the Holocaust which he is using against the Palestinians. They took offence and we took the poster down in good faith and in the interests of reconciliation with the concerned students. They have since made complaints to the Students Union against Sukant Chandan (Education Officer) and Dan Glazebrook (President). They say: 1- we are abusing our positions of elected reps in forwarding our own personal poltical agendas, and not doing our jobs 2- Jewish students feel that the Palestine campaign on campus is anti-semitic, intimidates Jewish students although they know,a nd state themselves, that none of us are anti-semitic and that none of our publicity has any anti-semitism in it 3- That Sukant Chandan should not a, wear a badge expressing support for the Intifada b, should not support Hamas [what about pflp, Jihad, Al-Aqsa etc?! - SC] and c, should not support suicide bombings 4- that anything that compares jewish suffering in the holocaust should not be equated to any other supposed holocaust as it would be a insult to, and belittle the Jewish suffering in the holocaust. They put the blame on the Students Union for not enforcing reps to be apolitical in their job, as they feel that students, who feel intimidated by our politics, cannot approach us in our capcities as student reps in our work, especially myself, Sukant, who is Education Officer. I will soon enough give a reply to these statements. Just thought that I would give all of you a chance to give your own replies and to contribute what you all feel on this issue.
