Bell Tolls to Remind Chinese of Historical
Humiliation |

SHENZHEN, March 18 (Xinhuanet) -- A bell
tolled Monday morning in
Chung Ying Street, once the boundary between
Shenzhen and Hong
Kong and then known as "Sino-British Street", to
remind the
Chinese of a national humiliation over 100 years
ago.
On March 18, 1899, the then ruling government of the
Qing
Dynasty (1644-1911) was forced to lease the 975.1 square
kilometers of New Territory to Britain for 99 years, under "the
Convention Respecting an Extension of the Hong Kong Territory"
signed by China and Britain.
Present at Monday's
ceremony were citizens, soldiers, students,
veterans and tourists from
both sides of Chung Ying Street.
The bell will toll and a
ceremony will be held in Chung Ying
Street every year on the
anniversary of this event to remind all
citizens of this historic
humiliation, according to sources from
the municipal government.
