Former Vietnamese Army Leader Van Tien Dung Dies

   HANOI, March 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Former Vietnamese Army Leader Van 
Tien Dung died of severe disease on Sunday, said an obituary 
notice issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of 
Vietnam (CPV), Vietnamese President, the National Assembly and the
Vietnamese government on Tuesday.

   Van Tien Dung, who was born in a Hanoi suburb on May 2, 1917, 
joined the revolutionary ranks in 1936 and was admitted to the 
Communist Party of Vietnam in 1937. He was chief of the general 
staff of the Vietnamese People's Army, Minister of Defense, 
politburo member of the CPV Central Committee and secretary of the
Military Commission of the Central Committee of the CPV.

   Van Tien Dung had directly commanded the campaign of liberating
Quang Tri in 1972, the campaign to liberate Tay Nguyen in 1975, 
and was commander of Ho Chi Minh Campaign of liberating Sai Gon in
1975.

   According to the obituary notice, the Vietnamese Party and 
government decided to hold a funeral ceremony on Thursday.
