AFP. 22 March 2002. US pressured Mexico for Castro summit departure: Cuba. MONTERREY -- Cuban President Fidel Castro left a UN anti-poverty summit here in response to US pressure on Mexican authorities hosting the gathering, the head of the Cuban delegation to meeting charged Friday. Casto returned unexpectedly to Havana late Thursday after delivering a scathing attack on international capitalism. At the time he attributed his departure to "a special situation" at the summit, which he did not explain. Friday, Cuba's National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon, who was left in charge of the Cuban delegation at the conference here, accused Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda of making "fundamentally false" statements on the affair. Castaneda explained soon after Castro's abrupt departure that neither Mexico nor the United States had raised any objection to the Cuban leader's visit. "Very authoritative officials of the Mexican government had informed us of pressure well before the conference," Alarcon said. Before leaving the anti-poverty summit, the Cuban leader painted a grim picture of world economic situation. In Havana, perplexed diplomats were meanwhile at a loss to explain Castro's action. "He (Castro) was visibly angry," said a diplomat, who noted that the Cuban leader chose to wear his martial-looking olive-green fatigues during his Monterrey address instead of the elegant suits he likes to don during international conferences. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
