.Power Workers in South Korea Continue Strike.

South Korean power industry workers in their thousands pledged Saturday to
continue their strike in spite of government and company ultimatums.

The government and power companies have warned the workers to return to work
by early next week or get fired.

Over 5,000 of them have been in the fourth week of a strike to protest a
government privatization plan.

The South Korean government and companies issued an ultimatum Wednesday,
urging them to go back to work by March 25 or be mass dismissed.

"The strike would go beyond the deadline without settling issues," a public
relations official of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions which has led
the power industry strike told the press.

There seems no possibility of resuming talks soon to end the strike as the
government is not ready to give up its privatization plan.

Nevertheless, South Korea's electricity supply remains normal as there are
many substitutes available.

Management at the companies said they had already fired nearly two hundred
striking union workers and warned that some four thousand could be fired if
they do not return to work soon.
