Serbia's railway union ends 10-day strike

BELGRADE, March 28 (Reuters) - Serbia's railway workers ended a 10-day strike on Thursday after agreeing with the government on a four percent pay rise, union leaders said.

Some 29,000 of the national railway's 30,000 workers began a strike on March 18 protesting over low pay and poor conditions. The strike halted all but international passenger services.

It also cut production at many major firms in the Balkan republic, including the Sartid steel mill, Petrohemija petrochemical complex, and the Paracin glass plant because their raw materials were stranded.

The government has estimated the strike cost industry more than $1.0 million. In talks with the unions, the government approved a four percent pay rise and promised to prepare a consolidation plan for the state rail company.

Senior trade union official Vukasin Cvetkovic said it would take between six and 10 hours to restart all the trains and re-establish normal rail traffic again.

Under the deal with the unions, the government also promised not to dismiss any workers over the strike or press criminal charges against organisers as it had threatened to do.
