SFOR compensates Bosnian villagers for damage in operation to get Karadzic Friday, 26-Apr-2002 SARAJEVO, April 26 (AFP) - NATO-led peacekeepers in Bosnia paid some 4,000 convertible marks (2,051 euros) to the Serb inhabitants of a village in south-east Bosnia to correct "perceived wrongs" in two raids aimed at arresting war-crimes indictee Radovan Karadzic, a press release said Friday. Soldiers from the NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR) visited the village of Celebici on Thursday in response to property damage claims made by villagers in the aftermath of the force's so-far fruitless search for Karadzic, SFOR said. SFOR conducted two consecutive raids in the area on February 28 and March 1 in a bid to arrest Bosnian Serb wartime leader, but both attempts ended in failure. The villagers were initially informed that their claims had been rejected, since "claims arising out of combat-related activities are barred from payments" under the Dayton peace agreement that ended Bosnia's 1992-95 war. However, the SFOR commander, General John Sylvester, had authorized payments unrelated to the villagers' claims, to aid them in repairing damage to their village. Meanwhile SFOR troops on Friday airdropped thousands of leaflets over four Serb-run towns in eastern Bosnia, offering a reward for information about Karadzic. The leaflets used in Friday's drop also outlined benefits that could be gained from bringing Karadzic and other war crimes suspects to justice "such as the increase in aid and employment opportunities," SFOR said. Karadzic, the political leader of Bosnia's Serbs during the war, is the best-known figure still at large who is wanted by the UN's International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia, which sits in The Hague. He is notably wanted for the killing of some 7,000 Bosnian Muslims in the village of Srebrenica in August 1995, the worst single massacre committed in Europe since World War II. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
