Uncertainty if Corpses Exhumed in Ljuboten Were
Civilian Victims
SKOPJE, May 2, 2002 -- (dpa) Most corpses exhumed from
a mass grave near the village of Ljuboten were wearing
uniforms, casting doubt on claims of a massacre of
civilians, according to Macedonian media.
Although local Albanians had made accusations
regarding the identities of persons tossed into the
grave, an official said "their identities did not
match identities given by local Albanians," an
official said.
Most of the exhumed bodies were clad in black uniforms
associated with the disbanded National Liberation Army
(UCK), an Interior Ministry official told the
newspaper Utrinski Vesnik. The bodies reportedly were
buried together last August.
Exhumations were conducted by investigators from the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former
Yugoslavia, headquartered in the Hague.
