US seeks world domination: Iran

TEHRAN (AFP) - The United States is hell-bent on world
domination, rendering the United Nations irrelevant in
its bid to control energy sources, Iran’s former
president alleged Monday.
“The presence of the US in the region, especially in
Afghanistan and in its open and arrogant aim to
overthrow the Iraqi regime, highlights that it wishes
to become the new conqueror of the world,” Ali Akbar
Hashemi Rafsanjani told defence ministry officials.
“The United States does not want to save the Iraqi
people. It wants to preserve its own interests,” said
the influential conservative, who heads Iran’s top
body of political arbitration, the Expediency Council.
Rafsanjani, quoted on state television and radio, told
the gathering that “US adventurism in the Persian Gulf
region is aimed at securing their vital interests,
especially those relating to energy.”
“The ultimatum of (US President George W.) Bush to the
UN” to deal with Iraq, delivered in a speech last
week, “has placed in jeopardy the credibility of the
UN,” Rafsanjani said.
In contrast, Rafsanjani on Friday welcomed Bush’s
speech to the UN General Assembly, saying it amounted
to a “step back” from the brink in dealing with Iraq.
A string of senior Iranian officials have voiced
fierce opposition to a US attack on neighbouring Iraq
and urged Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to readmit UN
weapons inspectors.
Meanwhile, Iraq President Saddam Hussein chaired
Monday a joint meeting of the govt and the ruling
Baath Party to discuss “current political” issues amid
threats of a US military attack on Baghdad.
The meeting was meant “to discuss some current
political issues,” the state agency ANI reported
without giving more details.
It was the second meeting of the Iraqi leadership
presided by Saddam in the last 24 hours.
On Sunday, senior Iraqi officials briefed Saddam on
their recent visits to Arab states aimed at mustering
support in Baghdad’s standoff with the United States
over its weapons programs.
The meeting gathered Vice President Taha Yassin
Ramadan, vice-chairman of Iraq’s ruling Revolutionary
Command Council Ezzat Ibrahim, and RCC member Ali
Hassan al-Majeed.
