According to 91 per cent of the respondents, NATO is not a viable prospect for Bulgaria, because it is a peace destabilizer and it is essentially hegemonic. Sofia, 15 October: Close to 93 per cent of the Bulgarian generals and officers of the reserve are in favour of a referendum to decide whether Bulgaria should join NATO or not. This was found in a poll whose results were made public at a news conference here Tuesday [15 October] by the Association of Generals and Officers of the Reserve in the Bulgarian Socialist Party. The poll was carried out between 15 August and 15 September among 464 reservists aged over 42. They were interviewed in person or over the phone. The aim of the study was to identify the dominating attitudes and expectations of this group of the population about the country's possible membership to NATO and its effect on national security. The pollsters found that 92 per cent of the respondents identify NATO and the United States as the main risk factor for Bulgaria's national security. Almost 75 per cent believe that the biggest risk are Bulgaria's NATO-member neighbours while 71 per cent mention international terrorism. According to 91 per cent of the respondents, NATO is not a viable prospect for Bulgaria, because it is a peace destabilizer and it is essentially hegemonic. They see as alternatives to NATO a regional, European or world security system under the UN patronage, some kind of a neutrality or military alliance with Russia, Ukraine, China or other countries.
