AP. 4 March 2003. Mexicans to travel to Iraq as "human shields." MEXICO CITY -- Mercedes Perello isn't a diplomat or a government official, but the 55-year-old university employee wants to contribute to international efforts at avoiding war in Iraq. She is the coordinator of a group of nine Mexicans who plan to leave Wednesday for Iraq, where they will serve as "human shields." Perello is among the majority of Mexicans who oppose military action against Iraq. She and others are calling on President Vicente Fox to maintain his anti-war stance, although the Mexican leader has moved closer to the United States' position by repeatedly calling for the disarmament of Iraq. Mexico, a member of the U.N. Security Council, has not said how it would vote on a U.S.-backed resolution paving the way for war. Some Mexicans fear a vote against military action would prompt retaliation from the United States, the destination for more than 85 percent of all Mexican exports. Perello's group -- made up of five students, a veterinarian, a nun and a housewife -- will return to Mexico in early April. They haven't been assigned a place to stay, but are planning to serve as "shields" in Roman Catholic hospitals. Former U.S. marine Ken Nichols-O'Keefe founded the Truth Justice Peace Human Shield action group, and has been helping groups around the world travel to Iraq in a bid to avoid war. Perello said hundreds of Mexicans responded to her call for help, some donating money and others volunteering to make the trip. However, officials were only able to find enough money to pay for the nine who will travel to Iraq.
