Sixty-nine percent of Italians are opposed to war "under any circumstances", while 21 percent would support war with UN approval and eight percent would support it unconditionally, the poll said. In the event of a war, more than half -- 53 percent -- of all respondents said Italy "should under no circumstances participate in military action in Iraq", according to the survey conducted among 807 people on March 8. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is one of US President George W. Bush's supporters over the need for military intervention in Iraq. Some 34 percent of respondents believed Italy should join a US-led campaign, on condition that it won UN authorisation. One respondent in ten thought Italy should join forces with the United States with or without UN backing. The results also suggested that Italian women outnumbered men in opposing war on Iraq -- 78 percent of the women surveyed were against a war, compared to 58 percent of men. Some 27 percent of people approved of recent attempts by anti-war activists to block Italian convoys of military equipment destined for US forces although the vast majority of reposndents disapproved of such action. Concerning the efforts of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein -- accused of developing weapons of mass destruction -- to cooperate with UN weapons inspectors, 73 percent of repondents believed he was simply playing for time.
