US military activities increases in southeastern
Turkey

-Washington is anxiously waiting for the green light
from Turkey to dispatch tens of thousands of combat
troops to Turkey for an Iraq operation.

Semi official Anatolia news agency reported on Monday
that also the activities of U.S. officials and the
transportation of military equipment to Gaziantep air
base has increased.

The only logistics base up to now, set up in Mardin,
hosts dozens of jeeps, ambulances, trucks and
fuel-haulers lined behind the walled compound,
surrounded by barbed-wire.

Some Turkish and a few U.S. soldiers stood guard
outside the perimeter of the base set up last week on
the outskirts of this southeastern town.

Some 30 more trucks carrying more U.S. jeeps and
military equipment left the eastern Turkish port of
Iskenderun for a 15-hour convoy to the base early
Sunday. The operation is run by some of 3,500 U.S.
troops authorized by Turkey two months ago under a
separate deal to start preparations at ports and air
bases for the arrival of combat troops.

The compound, once a grain refinery and warehouse
complex, is just a few kilometers away from a small
civilian airport and hundreds of meters away from the
main road running to the Iraqi border. U.S. military
logistic personnel have also been looking to rent land
closer to Iraq, apparently in a bid to set up new
bases, locals said.

Meanwhile, Anatolia reported that U.S. military
equipment and jeeps had been unloaded from the U.S.
ship and left Mersin port to reach the logistics base
in Mardin.

Washington is anxiously waiting for the green light
from Turkey to dispatch tens of thousands of combat
troops to Turkey for an Iraq operation.

Amid rising tensions with Iraqi Kurds, a mechanized
infantry unit of Turkish M-113 armored personnel
carriers conducted drills on Sunday within the
perimeter of a Turkish base, just three kilometers (2
miles) from the U.S. compound in Kiziltepe.

The drills coincided with unconfirmed reports that the
Turkish military had sent a number of tanks overnight
into northern Iraq. Local people said the tanks were
using portable metal bridges and moving in the dark to
pass the river of Hezil that divides Turkey and Iraq.
Military officials would not confirm the report.
