The Air Transport Association, which is made up mostly of American airlines, predicted a sharp fall in the number of passengers and a sharp rise in fuel prices in the event of a war in Iraq will increase pressure for further restructuring of U.S. airline industry. Analyzing the economic impacts of a possible war in Iraq, the association laid out four possible scenarios, ranging from no war in Iraq to the worst-case scenario where a U.S.-led war in Iraq goes on for one-and-half months while the U.S. is under terrorist attack. Under this worst-case scenario, the Air Transport Association predicts that air passengers will plummet by more than 40% for at least three straight months and the airline industry would need several years to make a comeback. U.S. airlines would then be required to cut 98,000 additional jobs and lose $13 billion in this year alone. Even without open hostilities in Iraq, U.S. airlines are projecting losses of $6.7 billion this year.
