http://www.rferl.org/newsline/2003/03/2-TCA/tca-140303.asp Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty March 14, 2003 POLL FINDS KAZAKHSTAN'S URBAN POPULATION AGAINST WAR IN IRAQ A poll conducted by the Kazakhstan Association of Sociologists and Political Scientists in early March in the country's 10 largest cities found that 83.5 percent of respondents oppose U.S. plans for a war against Iraq, Interfax reported on 13 March. According to the report, based on a 13 March association press release, 13.9 percent of respondents were undecided, and only 2.6 percent approve of a military action against Iraq. Some 50 percent of respondents said the main reason for a possible war against Iraq is oil. Less than 5 percent see it as a stage in the struggle against international terrorism. More than one-third fear that Kazakhstan could be in danger if it allows U.S. planes to use its airfields, thereby making the country a direct participant in the conflict.
