AP. 15 March 2003. New wave of anti-war protests and vigils kicks off in
New Zealand, Australia.

WELLINGTON -- Thousands marched in cites and smaller towns across
Australia and New Zealand on Saturday to protest against a possible
American-led war on Iraq.

More than 4,000 people marched in southern New Zealand's main cities of
Christchurch and Dunedin chanting "give peace a chance."

Police said the New Zealand protests, organized by the Peace Action
Network, was orderly with no arrests.

In Dunedin about 1,000 protested against a possible war against Iraq,
while in Christchurch more than 3,000 marched to the city's central
square.

In Australia several thousand rallied across the state of Victoria. The
largest turnout was at Traralgon, where organizers said 1,500 people
rallied.

In Melbourne, anti-war protesters held vigils, picnics, education
sessions and marches.

"We feel that there's still time to get our government to change
policy," Victorian Peace Network coordinator Nic Maclellan said.

Candlelight prayer gatherings are planned to start in New Zealand on
Sunday night and will kick off a series of vigils in more than 1,000
cities around the world.
