Reuters. 15 March 2003. Yemenis rally for Iraq, chant "Death to America." SANAA -- Yemenis, some carrying pictures of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, took to the streets on Saturday to protest against any U.S.-led war on Baghdad with chants of "Death to America." The crowd, which brought traffic to a halt for three hours in the capital Sanaa, carried placards which read: "America, Britain, Israel are an axis of evil" and "Do not cede, Do not cede, No to the Anglo-American war drums." The official Yemeni news agency said that hundreds of thousands of people took part in Sanaa. Some also waved the yellow flag of Lebanon's Hizbollah guerrilla group and chanted: "No to war, yes to peace" and "Death to America, Death to Israel." Yemenis in other major cities also joined anti-war rallies called by political parties and backed by President Ali Abdullah Saleh on a day of protests around the world against a possible war. Sheikh Abdul-Majid al-Zindani, a cleric and leading member of the Islamic opposition Islah party, called in a speech for training camps to be set up to "prepare youths for jihad (holy war)" if war is launched on Muslim Iraq. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
