CALCUTTA -- Thousands of people in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta
staged a protest march Saturday against the US threat of war on Iraq.

More than 5,000 school and college teachers, Muslim clerics and
communist party workers walked through the streets with messages
scrawled on their shirts such as "Stand for peace, no war."

"Intellectuals of the state are against war and we oppose US President
George W. Bush who is bent on attacking Iraq. He will ruin everyone's
future using bombs," Sumita Basu, a teacher in a city college, said.

Muslim leaders also criticised Bush.

"The US president has literally waged a war against Muslims across the
world after the attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center,"
Idris Ali, a cleric, said.

"Osama bin Laden, who is believed to have masterminded the attack, may
be a Muslim, but there is no place for terrorism in Islam. Muslims are
against any war," he added.

Police threw up a ring of security as the protestors marched up to the
city's American Center and submitted an anti-war memorandum to officials
there.
