PARIS, March 18, 2003. /From RIA Novosti correspondent Leonid Kokovich/--French President Jacques Chirac announced on Tuesday that George Bush's ultimatum to Iraq "threatens world stability." In a statement for the press distributed by the press service of the Palais de l'Elysee, the president stressed: "Iraq does not pose a threat the liquidation of which could justify immediate war." In his opinion, "Iraq is disarming-international inspectors testify to it." "The US has just presented Iraq with an ultimatum on the pretext that it is necessary to disarm Iraq and liquidate its regime. There are no legal grounds for a one-sided decision to unleash war," believes Chirac. According to his words, "The ultimatum jeopardizes the system of international values and relations and threatens the future of the Iraqi people, the future of the region, stability throughout the world." ------------------------------------------------------ http://en.rian.ru/rian/index.cfm?prd_id=160&msg_id=3113688&startrow=1&date=2003-03-18&do_alert=0 Russian Information Agency (Novosti) March 18, 2003 SWEDISH AMBASSADOR COMMENTS ON US ULTIMATUM -"War is a very dangerous thing. It is easy to start, but very difficult to finish." MOSCOW, 18 March, 2003. /Corr. RIA Novosti Alexander Smotrov, Vadim Grigorahsvili/--Sweden's ambassador to Moscow, Sven Hirdman, announced at a press conference in the Swedish embassy on Tuesday that he believed the US ultimatum to Saddam Hussein was in breach of international law and an instance of arbitrary rule in international relations. According to him, Stockholm does not believe that all the possibilities to solve the crisis peacefully have been exhausted. When talking about Sweden's position, the ambassador said that it was "very similar to Russia and France's [stance]." He indicated that he meant that the use of force could only be sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council and be within the organisation's Charter. Sven Hirdman said that Sweden very much regretted the intentions of the USA, Great Britain and Spain to start a war against Iraq. He also stressed that the international inspectors in Iraq led by Hans Blix had been working very well and should have been given more time. The Swedish ambassador warned about the dangerous consequences of the forthcoming war. He said that the region would probably be destabilised, while "this will lead to unpredictable consequences for the global economy and the world order." "War is a very dangerous thing," he said, "it is easy to start, but very difficult to finish." ------------------------------------------------------ __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
