Russian Information Agency Novosti December 10, 2009 U.S. reiterates support to Ukraine's NATO, EU bids -West-leaning Yushchenko, who was brought to power as a result of the 2004 "Orange revolution," is struggling to reach double figures in opinion polls. Washington: The U.S. will continue its support to Ukraine's democratic reforms and further integration with the West, U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton said. "The United States is committed to supporting Ukraine as it continues on the path to democracy and prosperity," Clinton said at a press briefing with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Petro Poroshenko on Wednesday. "We support Ukraine's further integration with NATO and the European Union. And we look forward to the free and fair presidential elections in January, and to working with the leaders chosen by the Ukrainian people as they take the steps necessary for economic recovery and reform," the U.S. top diplomat said. A total of 18 candidates have been registered to run in the Ukrainian presidential election due on January 17. West-leaning Yushchenko, who was brought to power as a result of the 2004 "Orange revolution," is struggling to reach double figures in opinion polls. Polls point to Viktor Yanukovych, the president's opponent in the controversial 2004 race, as the leading contender, along with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, an ally-turned-rival of the incumbent president. Ukraine and Georgia have long been pursuing NATO membership but their bids were turned down due to pressure from Germany and France at a 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest. However, NATO has stated that the two countries will join at an unspecified date in the future.
