Top U.S. Military Officer Concerned About Iranian Incursion

The top U.S. military officer has voiced concern about an incursion by Iran
into Iraq where Iranian soldiers seized an Iraqi oil well.

Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, said he had
spoken to Iraq's defense minister, but it was for leaders in Tehran and Baghdad
to resolve the dispute.

Military action against Iran remains an option: Mullen

WASHINGTON: Diplomacy offers the best way to resolve tensions over Iran’s
nuclear programme but the Pentagon must be ready with military options if
needed, the top US military chief said on Monday. “No resolution is yet in
sight, but I fully support the effort to focus on diplomatic solutions to
existing tensions” with Iran, Admiral Mike Mullen wrote in a memorandum setting
out strategic priorities for the US armed forces in 2010. “My belief remains
that political means are the best tools to attain regional security and that
military force will have limited results,” said Mullen, chairman of the Joints
Chiefs of Staff. “However, should the president call for military options, we
must have them ready.”

Mullen worried Yemen becoming terrorist 'haven'

ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT — Adm. Mike Mullen is applauding a military
strike in Yemen against suspected members of the al-Qaida terrorist group.

The top U.S. military officer said Sunday he has been concerned for some time
that Yemen could become "another safe haven" for terrorism. He applauded the
effort to go after an al-Qaida cell which he said has grown significantly over
the last couple of years.

Mullen said the United States will continue to help Yemen develop its ability
to fight terrorism, but he refused to discuss whether the United States played
an active role in the recent operation.

The New York Times reported the U.S. provided firepower and other aid to Yemen
for the strike this past week against suspected al-Qaida hide-outs and training
sites within its borders.
