Czech News Agency January 20, 2010 Czechs to send three reps to NATO's AWACS -The joining of the programme will raise the quality of and reinforce the overall defence-ability of the Czech Republic and strengthen its position in NATO. -Apart from the Czech Republic, AWACS members are Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the United States. Prague: The Czech Republic will send three experts to NATO's E-3A AWACS airborne early warning and control system this year, Defence Ministry spokeswoman Lucie Kubovicova has told CTK. Further four soldiers are to start working within the system next year. Within two years, the Czech military is to send nine soldiers to AWACS who will operate either as pilots or specialists, Kubovicova said. The Czech military is also to send its representative to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium, this year. The country joined AWACS on January 1. It has been the 18th state protected by aircraft with the characteristic radar dish protruding from the back, close to the tail. AWACS planes, which are the NATO's only international air force unit, mainly operate from the Geilenkirchen base in Germany. They also use advance airports in Greece, Italy, Norway and Turkey. The task of the aircraft is to detect a possible air assaulter far outside the airspace protected. They can also navigate and direct allied air force in air battles, and coordinate air attacks on ground targets. The joining of the programme will raise the quality of and reinforce the overall defence-ability of the Czech Republic and strengthen its position in NATO. At present, one Czech pilot is undergoing training at the NATO base in Geilenkirchen. He is to take part in allied operations as of the autumn. The Czech government decided on AWACS in mid-December. Prague has conducted long negotiations with its partners about its accession. The Czech contribution to the system's NAPMO programme will be almost 290,000 euros a year. It will be covered from the Defence Ministry's budget.
