Afghan violence kills three US, Nato soldiers

KABUL: Bomb attacks and a firefight killed three foreign soldiers, one of them
identified as an American, in separate incidents in war-torn Afghanistan on
Monday, Nato said.

Two of the soldiers, including the American, were killed by improvised bombs,
which have become a major asset in the arsenal of Taliban-led insurgents,
Nato's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

ISAF did not disclose the nationalities of the two other casualties, who it
said were killed in separate incidents in southern and western Afghanistan.

Two brief statements from ISAF announced the soldiers' deaths, but gave no
specific details of where the incidents had taken place.

“An ISAF service member from the United States was killed today in an IED
strike in southern Afghanistan,” the force said earlier Monday.

The deaths mark a grisly start to the month and bring to 47 the total number of
foreign soldiers to die in Afghanistan so far this year, according to an AFP
tally.

Last month's death toll of 44 was the highest for the month of January since
the Taliban regime was overthrown in a US-led invasion in late 2001.

It compared with 25 for January 2009.
